What Is Perimenopause and What are the Symptoms
Perimenopause is the transition period into menopause that can start as early as age 35 years.
Perimenopause may commence as early as 35 and persist until menopause is confirmed (marked by 12 months without a menstrual cycle), usually between 48 to 54 years of age, or sometimes longer. During this phase, women may experience up to 37 distinct symptoms, including:
- Night sweats
- Hot flashes
- Tender breasts
- Irregular or heavy menstrual cycles
- Intense PMS
- Mood fluctuations
- Sleep disturbances
- Fatigue
- Urinary issues
- Altered libido
- Changes in muscle and fat distribution
This stage is characterized by significant hormonal shifts which can profoundly affect a woman's quality of life. Despite common beliefs that these changes are normal and inevitable and nothing can be done about them, our clinic takes an active approach to managing perimenopause. We emphasize the importance of initiating treatment during perimenopause rather than waiting until menopause fully sets in. This proactive strategy has been highly effective for the majority of our patients.
What Is The Difference Between Perimenopause And Menopause
Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause. It can start as early as your mid-30s to early 40s and typically lasts several years. During this time, your hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone, begin to fluctuate. Perimenopause ends when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a period.
Menopause, on the other hand, is the point in time when that 12-month mark is reached, and your menstrual cycles have officially stopped. It usually occurs around age 51, though it can happen earlier or later. After menopause, your body produces much lower levels of estrogen and progesterone, which can continue to impact your health and quality of life. As you transition out of perimenopause, it's important to understand how hormonal changes continue to impact your health. Learn more about our medical approach to managing menopause.
